Benny the Alphabet Bear came to visit the kindergarten from New Hampshire. The children guessed other states that begin with N, but they were excited to hear that he came from a place that many had visited. They brainstormed words in different categories that begin with N, and the children have been coming up with new words all week. They listened to Mr. N's song about his noisy nose and did other activities to reinforce the sound of N as well as writing the letter in its upper and lower case forms. In science, we started discussing mammals and their characteristics, and the children now know that mammals have a backbone, hair or fur, give birth to live babies, and feed their babies from their bodies. They used their sorting skills to separate the plastic animals into mammal/non- mammal. We will also be talking a lot about bears, their characteristics and their habits as well as their habitats. The children heard non-fiction books and information about brown bears such as the North American Brown Bear, where they live and what they eat. We made a list of things we know about bears and have been adding to that list as the children learn new information. They also listened to fiction stories about bears, such as The Bear Under the Stairs. We have also been discussing the changing seasons and how the earth goes around the sun. They were eager to use their bodies to demonstrate their understanding and then they turned to a partner to re-teach what they learned. In math, the children have been practicing writing the number five. They have also been doing mental math and taking the "math challenge" when I tell them that I'm thinking of a number between two numbers, or when I ask them on what day of the week our next red number day (increments of ten) comes out. The children have also begun to memorize their phone numbers, and they enjoyed making a class telephone book. This week in Hebrew, the students finished the letter "Hay". They learned the words "Har" (mountain), "Helycoptair" (Helicopter), and created the letter with moon sand, peg boards and clay. Bentzi came to visit the class to review all of the "Hay" vocabulary. In T'filah, we continue to work on our prayers and have added musical instruments when singing the "Halleluyah" prayer. In Torah, we reviewed all of the stories that the children learned this year. They have been learning all about Chanukah this week. We have read some stories about the history of Chanukah and they created a poster with many of the facts that they have learned. The students have been practicing the blessings over the candles and singing some Chanukah songs. |
