There was so much going on in kindergarten this week! Passover is in the air, and you can feel the excitement as soon as you walk in the door. The children are singing Passover songs and doing projects, some of which you can use on your seder tables. Next week we will be making centerpieces for the tables at the school seder!
While Benny could have or should have come from Israel this week, he can only travel in the United States because he never got a passport. Instead, he came from Indiana, and the children found it interesting that he had no ocean near him. They were excited to learn yet another vowel and were eager to share many words that begin with the long and short I sound i as well as short i words. As they do for each vowel, they are making another book called "The Big Pig Book," which has many short i words. These books will go home next week before the holiday. They enjoy using unifix cubes with the "ig" ending written on them to make words by adding another cube with a consonant. If you ask them, your children can explain this game to you. They have also been working on rhyming and listening to many rhyming books. They are also practicing clapping out syllables for names and words.
Many children continue to write about dinosaurs at the writing center and play with dinosaur games, etc., from the center. We continue to read books and have discussions about extinction, and the children have many of their own theories. We are focusing this week and next on fossils, and they will have the opportunity to see a real dinosaur fossil.
The children have also been working on measuring, and they used inchworm cubes to measure things in the room, such as their shoes, a block, a pencil and a piece of paper.
We were all fortunate to have been invited to visit Temple Emmanuel while their visiting scribe (sofer) repaired a Torah. The children got to hold the quill or touch someone who was close enough to hold it, and participate in the act of writing a letter in a real Torah. They were then able to use a quill dipped in ink to color in a Hebrew letter on a piece of paper. The smiling faces in the picture will show you how much they enjoyed themselves!
This week, in Hebrew, the children finished up the letter "Ayin". They reviewed all of the vocabulary words and created a page for their Hebrew dictionaries.
In Torah, we continue to talk about the Passover story. The children created several Passover projects, including Moses and the burning bush, Afikoman bags for the Seder table and additional pages for their Haggadot.
We have been singing many Passover songs in class. The children must be singing them at home because they are always singing them during the school day. The songs include the order of the Seder ("Kadesh Urchatz", "Dayenu", "L'shana Haba'ah B'yirushalayim", and the four questions).
Shabbat Shalom!!
