This week the children continued to practice recognizing, reading, and writing the letter E in both its upper and lower case form. They also made a cover for their Red Hen Book and began illustrating the pages. The children read each page to me as they go along resulting in being able to read the whole book by themselves. They each have a book for their reading folders, and as they finish and read them to me, they will be sent home. If your child has a reading folder at home that has been there for a while, please send it back as soon as possible so that I can send another book home. We also have been working on recognizing and writing as many sight words as possible. The children also did a writing project where they used a story starter, in this case a snowman, and wrote something about it.
In math, the children have been practicing combinations of seven as well as skip counting. While there may not be many "worksheets" coming home for math, please know that we do math all the time, most often with hands on projects. The children are learning that math is all around us not just once or twice a week on a worksheet. For instance, if a child has seven crackers for snack, we discuss how to make a number sentence out of that. "If____eats 5 crackers, how many will she have left?" They understand that math is part of our everyday lives.
We also discussed Eskimos (short e), where and how they live, and found their locations on our world map. They learned that igloos are just temporary homes for Eskimos. The children did an adorable project and some even decided to paint a picture of an Eskimo (see pictures).
We have been reading books and talking about collections for our 100 day celebration coming up this Monday, March 2nd. Please send in your children's collections with them in the morning.
After days of indoor recess, we finally got out in the snow and sunshine on Wednesday. The children had a wonderful time climbing on the snowbanks and playing in the snow. Please check out the attached pictures. A couple of children had no mittens or hats and had to borrow mittens from other children. If you haven't sent in gloves and hats for your child, please do so as soon as possible. Thank you!
In Hebrew, the class finished up the letter "Vav" and began learning the letter "Tet", its sounds and vocabulary words. They learned the word for ring ("Taba'at") and made a Tallit.
In Torah, we discussed the story of Abraham and Sarah and their son Yitzhak. Yitzhak means laughter. When Abraham and Sarah found out that they were going to have a baby they laughed because they were so old!
Purim is next week and the class has been very busy learning everything there is to know about Purim - the story in the Megillah and the customs and traditions of the holiday. We will be having a Purim celebration in school next Thursday, fulfilling all of the requirements of the holiday which are giving Tzedakkah, listening to the Megillah, giving gifts to others called "Mishloach Manot", and enjoying a festive meal together.
We continue to practice our prayers almost every time we are together.
Shabbat Shalom!
